A worldwide online survey identifying genetic patterns in Parkinson's demonstrates an overall need for global collaboration and new comprehensive approaches for Parkinson's, according to research released today at the International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders®.
Evidence for Early Detection of Bone Loss
in those with Parkinson's
Bone loss in people with Parkinson's is considered to be multifactorial and a result of motor disfunction. In this study, with mice as a model, researchers show that osteoporosis associated with Parkinson's is caused by dopaminergic degeneration itself, with no deficit of motor activity, as well as treatment with levodopa, the current gold-standard medication for affected patients. 
Billionaire to Fund $10 Million Parkinson’s Competition
With Michael J. Fox Foundation
The competition seeks to create what MJFF calls a groundbreaking imaging tool "to visualize the key protein alpha-synuclein," clumps of which are found in nearly all the brains of people with Parkinson's. This donor will provide $8.5 million in funding to as many as three winning research teams, with the team that makes the most progress in two years or less eligible for another $1.5 million.
