Parkinson's May Start Before Birth, New Study Suggests

Through their article in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers shared their trial of a specific type of stem cell, called iPSC, from the blood cells of patients with early-onset Parkinson's, a process that takes adult cells "back in time" to a primitive embryonic state.
"Our technique gave us a window back in time to see how well the dopamine neurons might have functioned from the very start of a patient's life," Clive Svendsen, senior author and professor of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine at Cedars-Sinai, said in a statement.

Research Collaboration Could Help Slow Down

A collaboration between scientists at Rutgers University and Scripps Research led to the discovery of a small molecule that may slow down or stop the progression of Parkinson's:
"For the first time, we discovered a drug-like compound that has the potential to slow down [Parkinson's] before it advances through an entirely new approach," said Mouradian. Such a treatment would be most effective for people who are in the early stages of [Parkinson's] with minimal symptoms, she said.
