Struthers Parkinson's Care Network
Wednesday February 12, 2020
THE CATALYST
Our dear friend, Karen, approached us with the desire to help fund more education for professional caregivers and facilities. Karen felt a great need for this Parkinson’s education as she had watched her mother’s Parkinson’s progress in an assisted living facility where she was told not to move, because she was too great of fall risk. She was strapped into her wheel chair instead of being challenged safely. Karen knew better, but couldn’t convince the administration.
BENEFITS TO COMMUNITIES
The Struthers Parkinson’s Care Network (SPCN) will provide a TRUSTED resource when looking at care facilities and agencies. These facilities will have the most up to date Parkinson’s training and education. They will be held accountable for maintaining their Parkinson’s care by the SPCN. When you see a facility or agency affiliated with SPCN, you know that you will get the best care possible, with your specific Parkinson’s needs and consideration in mind.
Thanks to this collaboration with Struthers, NW Parkinson's staff has a go-to answer for the question “who do you know” and “who do you recommend” when families are considering in home care or moving to a facility.
By partnering with Struthers Parkinson's Care Network, NW Parkinson's is honoring Karen's call so that people with Parkinson's can capitalize on the dynamic and specialized training necessary for high quality support and assisted care.
Our goal is to continue building this lifeline of HOPE throughout the NW Parkinson's community, and you can help. If and when you recognize the need for Parkinson's-specific care training, contact our Regional Director Halle Goodwin to refer a facility. See HOW TO REFER at the bottom of this post!
PARTNERSHIPS WITH SITES
We’re excited to partner with care facilities and care agencies to better support our Parkinson’s community that is utilizing these services. Our trainees can better refer to NW Parkinson’s, as well!
The first Parkinson's Care Training will take place on March 25 & 26, 2020, at the NW Parkinson's Spokane Resource Center. Check out the training details by clicking on the picture below or contact Halle@NWPF.org:

QUOTES FROM TRAINEES
"What I learned was INVALUABLE information on how to carry forward the care for our residents and I was so excited to come back from the training and teach it and really let the staff understand the importance of what they are doing and the care to get the best OUTCOME. "
Patty Kreuger, Dir of Health and Well Being
Waters Senior Living, Plymouth, MN
"We’ve really empowered our staff with the knowledge of the best way to help a patient when they’re frozen and can’t walk or they’re stumbling forward, the importance of pills on time has been a huge push throughout our organization."
Ashley Steen, RN
Knute Nelson, Alexandria, MN
"At the beginning I was nervous and knew very little about Parkinson’s. With the training, I was equipped to facilitate and I knew I had someone to look to if I had questions or if the group had questions, I knew I could turn to Struthers and they would provide the information or support that we needed."
Jay Hakoum, Social Services
Lyngblomsten, St. Paul, MN
QUOTES FROM TRAINERS
"All levels of the organization need awareness in how to best serve the Parkinson’s community."
Rose Wichmann, Manager, Struthers Parkinson’s Care Center
